Overqualified & Underestimated?

You apply for roles for which you would be successful and thrive in and yet you are being overlooked.
Why? Because employers fear you will be too expensive, get bored, or leave quickly. Often you do not even get the chance to explain.
Here’s how to take back control of the narrative and move from "overqualified" to become "high-value".
Try reframing your message and focus on the impact you would make, not titles. Reiterate that you are seeking meaningful work that aligns with your values.
Make sure you tailor and refine your Resume and LinkedIn profile to show outcomes, emphasising your achievements and not just where you sat on the organisation chart.
Network with purpose as those conversations unlock doors and this allows you to circumnavigate the ATS and go straight to the decision makers. Show how you add value and offer insights.
If the pay is lower, think about the total value, not just the salary package. Is there an opportunity for a sign-on or performance bonus, seek a financial contribution to professional development or memberships? What flexibility or growth does the job offer? Can you take on a mentoring role?
As a result of the current job market, staying motivated in your search means playing the long game. If a role aligns with your skills and long-term goals, even if the job title or salary is lower, think of it as a strategic step, not a step backwards.
Make sure that you communicate your own story and position yourself effectively, stay proactive and show them why they need you! By leveraging your network you can turn being “overqualified” into being the very best qualified candidate for the job.
